Overwhelmed by the remendations provided by my friends, I decided to take a look on this Sherlock Holmes and the Duke’s Son originally published by Oxford University Press.
As a whole, this book is about a case concerning the Duke’s missing son. Arthur, the Duke’s son, was found out in a certain morning to have disappeared, acpanied with which was also the disappearance of the German teacher. The school master Dr. Huxtable then turned to the famous detective of the time Sherlock Holmes for help. Realizing how tough and important the case is, Holmes immediately made up his mind to accept the case and followed Dr. Huxtable back to Mackleton by train. Having formed a rough idea about the wholle matter, Holmes probed into the case immediately and had a careful investigation of the entire area shortly after the arrival, during the process of which he discovered the body of the German teacher Heidegger. Finally, primarily due to his prominent ability as a detective, he managed to unravel the mystery and obtained the twelve thousand pounds promised by the Duke.
Having once started reading this fiction, I was pletely immersed in the mysterious story presented by the book. As the saying goes, “Well begun, half done”. At the beginning of the story, just like many other detective stories, the author gives us a brief description of the condition by the words of a client. However, unlike other ones, this story first delineates the client’s strange behavior at length to indicate the severity of the incident in order to attract the readers to continue reading it. As is known to all, vivid depiction is essential to detective stories since it can help the readers understand each figure’s characteristics and visualize the scenes, thus making the story more authentic and attractive. Therefore, trying to present a “real world” to his readership, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the original “Holmes series”, has skillfully arranged the plots of the whole story from the perspective of Dr. Watson, a character not so specialized in discovering the t
ruth hidden behind the enigmatic happenings as Holmes but so loyal to Sherlock Homes as a friend that he always acpanies Holmes wherever he goes. In this way, he elaborately depicted every scene and character in the book, Apart from the special start, the ending of the whole story, being dramatic but reasonable, is certainly an outstanding one. After all, except the author himself, who knows that the Duke’s seemingly ordinary secretary is in fact the Duke’s bastard? In addition, who knows that the Duke actually has already been acquainted with the whole thing before Holmes solves this plicated problem? Yet, surprising as it is, this ending seems so natural that it fits all the plots of the story perfectly well. While enjoying this wonderful story, I could do nothing but admire the wonderful design of this masterpiece as well as the author’s gorgeous writing skill. Closing my eyes, I can even “see” the story happening just like watching a film. Not until then did I understand why the Japanese cartoon film Detective Conan used this “Conan” as the name of its hero.
As far as I am concerned, nothing is more admirable and surprising in the hero Sherlock Homes than his profound knowledge which has certainly assisted him a lot when he was studying the case. Take the bicycle tyres for instance, Holmes actually is capable of recognizing 42 different varieties of bicycle tyres. What’s more, according to his other stories, Holmes has studied different kinds of newspapers, cigarettes, people’s footprints and other special things as well. Therefore, he seems to have the mastery of anything relevant to the cases he deals with. Except for his illimitable knowledge, Holmes also specializes in arranging the facts in order and then finding the fact leading him to a GREat discovery or even the truth itself. From his speaking “Every mystery has an answer”, we can readily shape the impression of a man with great intelligence and inflexible will. Pinkney's descriptive paages resonate with the splendor of nature's beauty.The glowing watercolors, filled with intricate details, make each blade of gra visible, and the delicately drawn, nearly transparent mosquitoes are as ethereal as they are in life.The
subtle details incorporated into the scenes--a frog catching a paing fly at the pond and a tiny mouse perched by a crate in the old woman's cottage--make children take another look.
One day he heard a sound of whirring wings, and up in the air he saw a flock of birds flying high.They were as bright as the snow that had fallen during the night, and their long necks were stretched southward.Oh, if only he could go with them! But what sort of companion could he be to those beautiful beings?
I am too ugly even for a dog to eat,' the duckling thought.Jerry Pinkney's poignant text and rich artwork convey the timele appeal of this tale of hardship and redemption.Anyone who has suffered the sting of ostracism can sympathize with the ugly duckling's plight and will relish the uplifting conclusion.
This really is an intresting and exciting book.I like it very much!

What Will You Do At the End of Days
Once I take it for granted,enjoying the warm sunshine ,eating the delicious food,living in the world and just killing the time.I’m not sure of what I shuld do for my future and what I can do for others.
And one film seems to make me aware of them,it’s called .Not only did the excellent stunt makes me forget to breathe,but also its moving plots hit my heart as well.I still remembered that president of the United Sorgtates said,”Everyone should have a chance to ask for forgivene to each other,mothers should have a chance to comfort their children.And let’s step into into the darkne together.”Though it was the end of the days,the president gave his fellow citizens rights to know.Although the busineman was cheap and selfish,he threw his children to the ship and he lost the chance to survive.At this moment , I realized that my parents will never discard me whatever happens.
After watching it ,I began to think about what I would do when the same devastating catastrophy happened.And now,I clearly figure out what I should do.From now on,I will cherish all the things I have,for instance,the love from my parents and friends,the health,the wits.What the most meaningful thing I will
do is that I will help and comfort the people who are suffering from difficulties .Last but not least.I will endeavor to realize my dream and I want to be an interpreter.And I will never regret when I am at the end of days.

回顾几年来的教学之路，心中充满了许多感慨和无奈，一方面想尽己之所能，教好学生，不留遗憾；一方面却不能摆脱来自分数至上的压力。如何平衡这现实的矛盾，着实令人费周章，看了《小学英语教与学》之后，似乎找到了一些解决的方法。
一、教师必须明确小学英语的教学目的和基本要求
小学英语应符合儿童生理和心理发展的实际，通过听、说、认、读、唱歌、游戏、表演、画画等活动，激发和培养学生对英语学习的兴趣和对语言的敏感性，使学生养成良好的语言学习习惯，初步形成较好的语音、语调基础，并使其具备用所学英语进行简单交际的初级能力。同时在教学过程中，努力开发学生的学习智力，发展他们的思维能力、想象能力和创造能力，为学生进一步的英语学习打好基础。
二、在教学时，要重兴趣、成就感、自信心的培养
托尔斯泰说过：“成功的教学所需要的不是强制，而是激发学生的兴趣。”小学英语教学应采取一切可用的方法，激发学生对英语学习的强烈愿望，使他们爱学、乐学，而学习兴趣的保持又在很大程度上取决于学习的效果，取决于他们能否获得成就感，能否树立自信心。因此，教师要对学生多做激励，使学生体验到成功的喜悦，并逐步树立他们的学习信心。
三、课堂教学，实际生活密切相关
《英语课程标准》要求教师“创造性地设计贴近学生实际的教学活动”，吸引和组织他们积极参与，要能够使学生获取处理和使用信息、用英语与他人交流，用英语解决实际能力。只有接近生活的，真实的，复杂的活动才能整合多重的内容和技能。这将有助于学生用真实的方式来应用所学的知识。课堂教学向课外体验延伸，教师可设立交际任务。把课内的虚拟情景放到课外的真实体验中，以分组合作的形式，安排学生按英文购物单到超市完成采购任务，使学生充分体验英语交际所带来的成功感。
总之，书中阐述了很多教与学的方法，我觉得对于我的英语教学来说是非常有益的，在以后的生活中应该多多阅读与参考此类书籍。
