Chinese literature, in general, does not have a high international profile. Contemporary authors such as Lao She (老舍), Su Tong (苏童) and Jiang Rong (姜戎) are read in western countries, but western readers, as Howard Goldblatt says, “read Chinese fiction as a window into China, as opposed to real literature.” Goldblatt, an American, has translated many modern Chinese novels, including those of Mo Yan, and his main criticism of Chinese fiction is that it is, “too introspective, that it is not sufficiently global. 当我从头至尾看完他在瑞典学院的演讲视频后，我为他鼓了掌，而且我的鼓掌是由衷的，完全没有他所讲的某些小学同学不哭装哭，甚至用唾沫当眼泪的表演成分，因为鼓掌时只有我一人在家，表演给谁看？我为他鼓掌也不是因终于有了一位同胞能站在世界文学的舞台上的自豪，也不是因为他的镇定自若，言简意赅，我鼓掌的理由是因他演讲的形式和所传递的人间之关爱、人和自然之关爱。
首先，令我感动的是他演讲的形式和平淡无奇的口气，如此新鲜，完全出乎我所料。不同于曲啸、司马南之辈的附庸风雅、空洞说教；没有于丹等辈的自我标榜、油嘴滑舌、哗众取宠；他的演讲没有说教，没有口号，没有矫揉造作，没有八股，简简单单却透彻心扉，听起来是那么入耳，那么亲切，那么能令人动情，又从中受到那么多的教育和启迪。由此让我终于懂得了什么才是真正的演讲，怎样去给人作报告。
其次，令我感动的是他对小说家的描述，小说家就是一个讲故事的人，又是个编故事的人，又是具备讲故事、编故事天才的人。多么贴切！多么谦卑！完全不像某些人一旦有了点荣誉就不知天高地厚，自我吹嘘，自我夸大，从而使我对莫言产生了由衷的敬慕和崇拜。
再者，莫言的演讲最令我为之感动的是听似平淡，却处处涌动着爱的波澜和容忍的浪花，让人受益匪浅。
爱是感情动物的共性，正因为世间有了母子之爱、亲戚之爱、乡邻之爱才能构成千万个家庭和人类社会，才能使家族得以繁衍、社会得以延续，才能产生一个个鲜活的人物和生动的故事，才能给作家创作提供无穷的动力和丰富的源泉。莫言母亲对儿子的爱，莫言本人对亲人的爱、对生活的爱、对家乡的爱，都成了他小说的.素材；他所爱的家人、亲戚、乡邻也成了他小说中人物的典型。莫言之令我感动，就是因为他所讲的故事看似波澜不惊、平平淡淡，都是一个个普普通通、身边无处不在的小小故事，却透彻心扉，让人体会到了大仁大爱、大慈大悲。无疑，传播爱，颂扬爱，就是莫言这次演讲的目的和主线。
