But Brian soon found that these people had exceptional generosity. Love Is Everything
The winter cold hung in the air like a frozen dinosaur trying to thaw from his glacier and walk across the earth. Breath iced like a tiny morning mist upon a meandering river. The sounds of the city rising and spilling into silence as the night began to claim its citizens for sleep.
Blowing on gloved hands that seemed to have little effect on cold hands that ached with chill. Long hours hanging pressed clothes, pulling tickets and ringing up the customers. The last of the packaged hot chocolate gone and only the longing need for home and a pot pie to warm her.
It was payday and she cashed her check. Two Santas and one Salvation Army captain and she was minus ten dollars but what did it matter? She had a place to sleep, something decent to eat, and she had Drew.
Drew with his kindness, his caring and his humor to lighten her day. Thanksgiving was nigh and they were collecting early for the hungry and the children that would have no Christmas without them. She was so much more lucky than most of them but perhaps not as lucky as those that scurried in the Wednesday night sleet, shopping early before the pickings became slim. Life was not always easy but sometimes it could always be safe.
She had Drew, and Smat, the ugly little terrier that nobody wanted. She had comfort and warmth in the apartment. She had dinner for tomorrow thawing in the small turkey and the little Thanksgiving bonus from her boss.
But most of all, she had love. It was the most important of all.

母亲一个多么熟悉而由亲切的字眼，是一个多么温馨的名词!古今中外，多少文人墨客为母亲高歌，高颂母爱;感恩母爱，而我，一个平凡的男子，没有华丽的词藻、没有悦耳的歌声，只有用朴实的语言来叙说我勤劳、质朴、无私、高尚的母亲。
苦如黄连的母亲。上世纪五十年代中期，母亲嫁给父亲时，父亲是村里最穷的一户。母亲和父亲结婚的床也是向伯父借的。母亲一生生养三男两女，我排行老大。
“三年自然灾害”时，我们村子里很多人因为受饿，患了水肿病，有时每天要死好几个人。母亲饱尝了那种忍饥挨饿的滋味，深深感到土地和粮食的重要性。母亲虽然讲不出“民以食为天，”这样的大道理，但她懂得：有地种，就有粮食吃;有粮食吃，就不会饿死。母亲常常对我们说：千生百计，不如种地。只有自己在土地上种的庄稼打出的粮食，才吃的最香，才能睡的最踏实。
六、七十年代，父亲在单位工作，顾不了家，母亲便成了家里的主要“劳力”。那时，在生产队里，母亲和所有的男劳力一样干着繁重的农活。田里地里，母亲常常是披星戴月地劳作;回到家里，还要起早贪黑地忙碌，为一家七口人的生计问题而操心。
八十年代初期，农村实行了土地承包责任制后，我们兄弟妹五人也相继长大。母亲有多年农田管理的经验，她教会了我们耕地﹑播种﹑间苗﹑施肥﹑锄草﹑收割﹑打晒﹑。那时，我们家种的庄稼出苗齐﹑长势旺﹑收获也最多，常常博得左邻右舍的羡慕和夸奖，但付出的汗水和艰辛也最多。那段时间，是母亲带领我们在土地上创造辉煌的时候，也是母亲最引以为骄傲的时期。
或许是因为经年累月地在土地上劳作的缘故，也或许是因为曾经饱尝了灾荒年月里饥谨之苦的缘故，更或许是因为曾经过够了贫穷窘迫的日子，母亲已经与土地有了难以割舍的感情。她已经离不开乡村和土地了。

我已记不清多少个黎明醒来，母亲已不在枕边却在田边地头;我已记不清多少个傍晚母亲刚放下手中的活又迅速地扛起了锄头;我已记不清多少个黑夜母亲在那盏煤油灯又拿起了针为我们缝补衣裳;我已记不清母亲多少次冒着瓢泼大雨抢修老房清理沟道。但我记得清在母亲的一手张罗下，家里曾先后多次建房;我记得清母亲披麻带孝送走了爷爷奶奶......
母亲是那么的无私、无畏、无怨，用她深情的无微不至的汗水浇灌了我们兄妹五人长成参天大树，用一双柔弱的肩膀撑起一片蔚蓝的天空，让我们自由地呼吸伸展，让父亲安心地工作。但是无情的岁月，它掳走了母亲的青春;光阴的洗涤，漂白了母亲的黑发。看着满头银丝、满脸皱纹的母亲，我心生痛楚的同时也在暗暗自责自己年幼无知.....。
当夜深人静时，我站在灯火阑珊的城市里遥望故乡，想到这些时，不由得潸然泪下
我的孩子是母亲带大的，我一直跟母亲说，如果她愿意跟随我，只要我有饭吃，绝对不会让她及孩子饿着，哪怕是我没得吃，也要省下来给她和孩子吃。我是这样说，也是一直这样做的。尽管自己不算富有，但是，无论什么时刻，却总是想着母亲，这次回家当然也不例外，只要她愿意吃愿意用，我自然是愿意掏钱的。
随着母亲年龄的增长，母亲的身体也日渐衰弱，从前看着不起眼的小病也接二连三地不停。吃药、打针、再吃药、再打针……反反复复，病毒未见根除却愈加猖獗。
每次抚摸着她因过度注射肿的像面包一样紫青的双手，看到她不停地服用大剂量的抗生素，我心里的苦水就一个劲儿地往外冒。在我看来，她吞下的已经不是治愈疾病的良药了，而是潜伏在生命中的一个个隐雷。虽说，年龄大了抵抗力会有所下降，可也没见别人家的父母像她这样稍有些风吹草动身体就不能适应，比天气预报还要灵验。于是，我突然意识到她可能是下凡的耶稣，把旁人的苦难和病痛全都揽在自己肩上。背负着沉重的十字架，举步维艰。
我曾一度认为，她还能陪我走很久很久。可是这次回家看到她的近况，我不得不承认自己是在自欺欺人，依旧肥硕的身体已经没有了从前的健朗。如果我的茁壮成长要以母亲的日渐衰老为代价，那我宁愿永远都不要长大。可是，不可逆回的，是手心里残酷的时光。
我也曾认为自己会是一个坚强的角色，做好了充沛的心理准备，能够独当一面。可是兜转了一圈后才发现，我依然无法摆脱内心的恐惧——如果母亲离世。倒不是因为生活无法自理还需要别人的照顾才能苟安，而是担心“世界上最爱我的那个人不在了”我将如何自持和遣怀?心头这一大朵厚重的积雨云，无论何时想起，都会使我悲从中来，挥之不去。所以，我常常想先她而去，这样，至少我不用忍受那凛冽的悲伤。每当这时，母亲就会黯然道，“你也太残忍了，把所有的痛苦都留给我。”
我不愿意冥思下去了。生命中隐藏着那么多不可预知的未来，没有看到自己的生死薄之前，再多的猜测和担忧也是枉然。母亲是受难的耶稣，人生若有九九八十一难，那她早已疲惫不堪。如果老天突然召她回去，那就是看她太累了，不忍她在尘世中继续受苦。她替我背了那么多年的十字架，是该卸下来好好歇歇的时候了。我不该企图以早死来逃避现实的可悲。我有苦还可以像母亲求助，母亲有苦又该向谁倾吐呢?
活着，本来就是这个世界上最难的一件事情，纷纷扰扰，纠缠牵绊。可是正如“生活”这个词语本身的含义：生下来就得活下去。无论有多难!母亲为我树立了最好的榜样。母亲刚病那一会，路都走不好了，手脚一直颤抖，母亲实在是太虚弱了。尤其是母亲在南京医院那几天，母亲整个人都变了样，我的姐妹们全都吓得手脚颤抖了!幸亏及治疗，一切才化危为安!
母亲出院后，我们自然是要给她补身子。她以前不吃鸽子，还要买来放生，现在也吃了，加了人参清炖的鸽子十分滋补。在母亲家里相聚的几天，姐妹们天天伴在一起，其乐融融，这样的日子好久不曾有过了!
在母亲病后的这些年里，儿女们都很孝顺，但无论我们怎样孝敬她，都回报不了她辛劳一生为我们所付出的巨大牺牲。“谁言寸草心，报得三春晖”。在她病危的日子里，她不愿再进医院，说是“你们大家的钱，都是汗水挣来，留着，以后好好过日子。”慈母心肠，由此可见一斑。
今天，是母亲生辰，只想对母亲说一声：“妈妈，生日快乐!福寿安康!我是爱您的!无论何时何刻!”
为了我的母亲也为了普天下的母亲，特献上此文，让我们做儿女的珍惜父母吧，莫到树欲静时而风不止，子欲孝时而亲不在。有些事情，当你年轻的时候无法懂得，当你懂得的时候，已不再年轻!世上有些东西可以弥补，而有些东西却永远也弥补不了。“孝”是稍纵即逝的眷恋，“孝”是一失足成千古恨的往事，“孝”是生命交接的链条，一旦断了，就永远无法连接。趁父母还健在时，赶快尽一份孝心，也许是一件衣服，也许是一双洁净的布鞋，也许是一声亲切的问候......
