标志词:新GRE阅读文章中的让步关系多种多样,大部分是比较明显的,标志性的词有 still, nevertheless, in spite of, all the same, even so, after all, ofcourse等。

Black Fiction does leave some aestheticquestions open. Rosenblatt's thematic analysis permits considerableobjectivity; he even explicitly states that it is not his intention tojudge the merit of the various works — yet his reluctance seemsmisplaced, especially since an attempt to appraise might have led tointeresting results. For instance …

In spite of such omissions, what Rosenblatt does include in hisdiscussion makes for an astute and worthwhile study. Black Fictionsurveys a wide variety of novels, bringing to our attention in theprocess some fascinating and little-known works like James WeldonJohnson's AutobiX.Xraphy of an Ex- Colored Man. Its argument is tightlyconstructed, and its forthright, lucid style exemplifies levelheadedand penetrating criticism.

The author's discussion of Black Fiction can be best described as

(A) Pedantic and contentious

(B) Critical but admiring

(C) Ironic and deprecating

(D) Argumentative but unfocused

(E) Stilted and insincere

A、C、E都是由and连接,无法表示让步和转折,故此不可以;D有but,但D的but之后为负评价,也不行。

Grocery has so far resisted the rise of online shopping. That may be about to change,THERE is a huge difference between being late and being too late, said Dalton Philips, the boss of Morrisons, on November 21st, as he announced the launch of the British grocer's online-shopping service.Morrisons' competitors have been selling broccoli and baby food via the internet for more than a decade.Britain's fourth-largest grocery chain had shunned e-commerce as a profit-sapping distraction.

It paid with falling market share and the defection of some of its best customers to Tesco, the country's biggest grocer, and Ocado, an online-only supermarket.Morrisons' change of heart will be noticed beyond Britain.Grocery is the biggest category in retailing but the most resistant to the advance of online shopping.Even in Britain, where it has gone furthest, it may account for just 5% of sales this year. But it is growing fast everywhere. The Boston Consulting Group expects the global market to grow from 36 billion this year to 100 billion by .

Grocers have held back for good reasons.Like many bricks-and-mortar merchants they fret that online commerce will shrivel sales in stores but not the costs associated with them.Grocery, with its tiny profit margins, adds complications.Virtual shopping-carts contain dozens of low-value items, which must be stored at different temperatures.Retailers can either get in-store staff to pick them off the shelves, which becomes disruptive as volumes rise, or build dedicated warehouses, which is costly. So are home deliveries: even in thickly settled Britain each one costs grocers around 10, but shoppers typically pay little more than 3.

Consumers are also wary. Many want to examine fresh produce before they buy it.They recoil when online grocers deliver substitutions instead of what they ordered. Many shoppers try grocery websites but get discouraged, says David Shukri of the Institute of Grocery Distribution in London.Among pioneers there have been spectacular wipeouts.California's Webvan expanded at breakneck speed, pampered customers with services like home delivery within half-hour slots, lost control of costs and collapsed in .

Its demise deterred imitators. In Britain Ocado has yet to make much money after more than a decade.Tesco claims its online operation, with nearly half the British market, is profitable. But it uses murky accounting for the cost of stores, where much of the produce is picked, says Andrew Gwynn of Exane BNP Paribas, an investment bank.Yet to shun online is to risk losing grocers' best customers, prosperous families and those with children.

It really is a prisoner's dilemma and you can't afford not to play, says Chris Biggs of BCG.Guess who's delivering dinner? In America, today's Webvans look sturdier.Peapod, the biggest American online grocer, acts as the internet arm of the Giant and Stop & Shop chains; all are part of Ahold, a Dutch giant. It has shown a flair for innovation: Peapod's customers can buy by scanning images of products on delivery lorries and coffee cups with their mobile phones.

Lazy Manhattanites have been ordering Thanksgiving feasts from FreshDirect, the second-largest online grocer, which is partly owned by Morrisons. Both ventures prosper because they cater to well-off families, largely in cities.American behemoths are unlikely to leave the field to specialists.Amazon began fresh-food deliveries in Seattle in and in Los Angeles last year.It is expected to add maybe 20 cities in , some abroad.Traditional grocery chains will respond.

They are determined not to repeat the mistakes other sorts of retailers made at the turn of the century, when they were too afraid of Amazon, says Robert Hetu of Gartner, a technology-research firm.Safeway, the second-largest supermarket chain in North America, is the only one besides Ahold with a substantial online operation.

Walmart, the world's biggest retailer, remains hesitant.Neil Ashe, its head of e-commerce, has questioned whether the chain's budget-minded customers want groceries delivered.

But this may be changing. A pilot project in San Francisco and San Jose is being extended to Denver.Walmart Labs in Silicon Valley has imported many of the people who developed the online-grocery business at Asda, its British subsidiary. On November 25th Walmart said that its new chief executive would be Doug McMillon, who as head of the international operation is responsible for Asda.He may speed Walmart's halting American effort.

If a big American retailer plunges in, others will take it seriously and the market will expand rapidly, says Mr Biggs. With luck, the newcomers will avoid the mistakes of earlier stumblers.Where internet grocery is still immature, supermarkets can encourage shoppers to click and collect from stores rather than spoil them with home delivery.A likelier model for sprawling, car-crazy America is France, where shoppers pick up groceries from drive-through supermarktes.

As volumes rise, picking will shift to shopperless dark stores and to automated, super-efficient fulfilment centres like Ocado's.BCG reckons that shoppers who become online converts spend 30% more.Another boon is that distribution centres on cheap land consume less capital than urban stores.Online grocers can thus earn a decent return on capital even with thin operating margins, Mr Gwynn says.He expects Ocado, which will share its second fulfilment centre with Morrisons, to achieve its first proper profit next year.

But as more consumers do their bulk buying online, and grocers start shutting their bigger urban stores, there will be a lot of large retail properties looking for new tenants.Morrisons does not have the luxury of starting slowly. It hopes to make up for its late start by entrancing shoppers. It will post frank ratings of its produce to build trust, a trick learnt from FreshDirect. If a customer doesn't like the look of the fresh food delivered to her door, she can send it back and claim a voucher.

Isn't this the sort of coddling that wrecked Webvan? No, says Mr Philips, for three reasons: Morrisons will exploit its buying power, its emphasis on fresh food brings relatively high margins and it will piggyback on Ocado's operations. The latecomer will beguile shoppers. It may be harder to charm shareholders.

Why Burberry's boss is a perfect fit for Apple.AMONG stewards of big luxury brands Angela Ahrendts, the boss of Burberry, is probably the geekiest. Her main achievement has been to make the 150-year-old British company the most technologically savvy of its peers.Burberry plans to be the first luxury company that is fully digital end to end, she boasts. But what can she do for Apple, which on October 14th said it would poach her to run its retailing operations?

Probably the opposite: revive a sense of style at a tech firm that has lately looked a bit dowdy. Many purveyors of luxury fret about cheapening their wares by selling them online.Of the 100 biggest luxury brands just 56 have transactional websites, according to Exane BNP Paribas, an investment bank.Ms Ahrendts, an American who took over Burberry in , had no such hangups.

Not content with flogging calfskin trench coats online, she has deployed every platform, device or bit of software she could think of to romance customers and spark collaboration among employees and suppliers.iPad-wielding salespeople in Burberry stores can look up what customers have already bought, and suggest what might take their fancy next.

Ms Ahrendts should add pizzazz to Apple's bricks-and-mortar shops, which are the most profitable in America measured by sales per square foot. But that seems a small job for a woman who last year was the highest-paid chief executive of a company in the FTSE 100 share index. At Apple, from next spring, she will merely be a senior vice-president.

Ahrendts。

So the odds are that her brief will go well beyond managing Apple's stores. She can help it crack the Chinese market, where its iPhones are also-rans in the race against cheaper smartphones from Samsung and local manufacturers.Burberry earns more than a third of its revenue in Asia compared with Apple's 28%.A bigger job will be to ready Apple for the coming fusion of fashion and technology.

The most talked-about new devices are wearable.Google's Glass smuggles a smartphone into a pair of spectacles.Samsung's Galaxy Gear squeezes some smartphone functions into a wristwatch.Apple is also keen to surf the wearable wave.An iWatch, which Apple may launch next year, would pull it towards Ms Ahrendts's home turf, since it would compete with fashionable timepieces like Burberry's.

Apple has long been something of a fashion house. Its product launches are choreographed like catwalk shows. But its glamour has faded since the death of Steve Jobs, its founder, in .His successor, Tim Cook, is striving to regain it.He recently hired Paul Deneve, the boss of Yves Saint Laurent, a French fashion house.Sir Jony Ive, Apple's design guru, now oversees the look of software as well as hardware. Ms Ahrendts brings another eye for beauty, and a knack for seducing consumers.

Because of strong overall stylistic similarities, prehistoric cave paintings in El Castillo, Spain and others in Altamira, Spain, were thought to date from the same period. Recent pigment analyses, however, established the Altamira paintings as by far the older and as about the same age as a third group of paintings done in a different overall style. Nevertheless, this case does not prove that stylistic similarities cannot be a reliable indicator of closeness in age, since ____________.

16. Which of the following most logically completes the passage?

A. experts who knew the results of the pigment analyses reexamined these paintings and found no previously unnoticed stylistic similarities between the Altamira paintings and the paintings in the third group

B. there are certain stylistic features that the Altamira paintings share with all known paintings of their period and do not share with the El Castillo paintings

C. before dating by pigment analysis was widely practiced, stylistic similarities were the only means of determining whether two prehistoric cave paintings dated from the same period

D. determining the age of a prehistoric cave painting simply by reference to the age of the pigments used in that painting substitutes technology for artistic judgment

E. there are experts who maintain that the results of the recent pigment analyses leave the striking stylistic similarities between the El Castillo paintings and the Altamira paintings unexplained

答案:

B

The surface of Venus calcite, a mineral that absorbs the gas sulfur dioxide. Sulfur

dioxide is often produced by volcanic activity and is plentiful in Venus’atmosphere, so

there must be a source, perhaps volcanic, producing sulfurdioxide on Venus.

1. Whichof the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. In the recent past, the level of sulfur dioxide in Venus’ atmosphere was notmuch

higher than it is now.

B. If there is volcanic activity on the surface of Venus, it is not adequate tomaintain the

observed amount of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere.

C. The sulfur dioxide in Venus’ atmosphere forms clouds that prevent direct observation of the surface.

D.Sulfur dioxide produced by volcanic activity on the Earth’s surface is also absorbed by minerals other than calcite.

E.The calcite on the surface of Venus is in sufficient supply to continue to absorb sulfur

for millions of years to come.

In the book’s frontispiece, Voltaire is seen writing at his desk, and over him a shaft of light from heaven, the light of truth, passes through Newton to Voltaire’s collaborator Madame du Châtelet; she reflects that light onto the inspired Voltaire.

Voltaire’s book(Elements of the Philosophy of Newton)commanded a wide audience, according to Feingold, because “he was neither a mathematician nor a physicist, but a literary giant aloof from the academic disputes over Newtonian ideas.” In other words, Voltaire’s amateurism in science “was a source of his contemporary appeal, demonstrating for the first time the accessibility of Newton’s ideas to nonspecialists.”

“aloof from the academic disputes over Newtonian ideas”是形容词短语修饰前面的“a literary giant”,其中“aloof from”意思是“置身…

For the following question, consider each of the choices separately and select all that apply.

Which of the following statements about Voltaire’s Elements of the Philosophy of Newton can be inferred from the passage?

A Voltaire’s literary stature helped secure a large audience for this attempt to popularize Newton’s ideas.

B Voltaire’s status as a nonscientist was an advantage in this effort to bring Newtonian science to the attention of the general public.

C The frontispiece of the book implies that Voltaire’s understanding of Newton’s ideas was not achieved without assistance.

答案:A, B, C

1、新旧观点;

2、现象和解释;

3、结论与解释;

4、如何问题解决;

That sex ratio will be favored which maximizes the number of descendants an individual will have and hence the number of gene copies transmitted.

That sex ratio which maximizes the number of descendnts an individuall will have and hence the number of gene copies transmited will be favored.

b在which引导的从句中,有两处省略:第一处在maximize的第一个宾语the number of descendants that an individuall will have中, an individuall will have是修饰descendants的定语从句,但是,因为descendants在从句中作have的宾语,所以引导词that可以省略。第二处省略 是在第二个the number of 之前,省略了与前面一样的成分that sex ratio which maximizes.

That sex ratio will be favored which maximizes the number of descendants an individual will have and hence the number of gene copies transmitted.GRE阅读难句训练方法倒装句的介绍!

If one begins by examining why ancients refer to Amazons , it becomes clear that ancient Greek descriptions of such societies were meant not so much to represent observed historical fact –real Amazonian societies – but rather to offer “moral lessons” on the supposed outcome of women's rule in their own society . (4)

解释:有两个词汇需要先解释一下:something be meant to represent是use something to mean的被动语态。 的意思是”的意思,而是表示做某事所表达的目的、意图,其英文释义为:to serve or intend to convey, show, or indicate.句中的结构为:something be meant not so much to,,, but rather to, 实际上是把be meant to和not rather 的两个固定搭配套在一起,意思是:不是为了……

If one begins by examining why ancients refer to Amazons, it becomes clear that ancient Greek descriptions of such societies were meant not so much to represent observed historical fact- real Amazonian societies- but rather to offer“moral lessons” on the supposed outcome of women's rule in their own society.

Upon maturity, monarch butterflies travel hundreds of miles from their places of origin and lay their eggs on milkweed. The caterpillars that emerge feed on milkweed and absorb the glycosides in milkweed sap. The specific glycosides present in milkweed differ from region to region within the monarch butterfly’s range. Mature butterflies retain the glycosides in a mature monarch butterfly could be used to determine its place of origin.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

A. Mature monarch butterflies do not feed on parts of milkweed that contain glycosides.

B. The glycosides in milkweed sap are slightly toxic to caterpillars of other species.

C. The vast majority of the monarch butterflies that are laying eggs in a given region will have traveled there from a single region.

D. There are substances other than glycosides in milkweed sap that accumulate in a monarch caterpillar and are retained in the body of the mature butterfly.

E. There are certain glycosides that are found in the sap of all milkweeds, no matter where they grow within the monarch butterfly’s range.

泛指化题型is driven to标记位置

b:比较级、最高级、唯一性、“所有”, only, in particular
