Whenever you see an old film, even one made as little as ten years before, you can’t help being strucked by the __1__appearance of the women taking part. The men taking part, on other hand, are clearly recognizable. __3__There is nothing about their appearance to suggest that they belong to an entire different age. This illusion is created __4__by changing fashions. Over the years, the great minority of men __5__have successfully resisted all attempts to make it change their __6__style of dress. The same cannot be said for women. Each year, a fewer so-called top designers in Paris and London lay down __7__on the law and women around the world run to obey. The __8__decrees of the designers are unpredictable and dictatorial.
Sometime they decide arbitrarily, that skirts will be short and __9__waists will be height; hips are in and buttons are out. __10__

We live in a society which there is a lot of talk about science, but I would say _____1
that there are not 5 percent of the people who are equipped with school, including college, to understand scientific reasoning. We are more ignorant of science as people _____2
with comparable education in Western Europe. There are a lot of kids who know everything about computers—how to build
them, how to take them apart, and how to write programs for games. So if you ask _____3
them to explain about the rinciples of physics that have gone into creating the _____4
computer, you don’t have faintest idea. _____5
The failure to understand science leads to such things like the neglect of human _____6
creative power. It also takes rise to blurring of the distinction between science and _____7
technology. Lots of people don’t differ between the two. Science is the production of _____8
new knowledge that can be applied or not, and technology is the application of knowledge to the production of some products, machinery or the like. The two are really different, and people who have the faculty for one very seldom have a faculty for the others. _____9
Science in itself is harmless, more or less. But as soon as it can provide technology,it’s not necessarily harmful. No society has yet earned to forecast the consequences of new technology, which can be enormous._____10
1. 在 which 前加 in,或将 which 改为 where
Money is a bottomless sea, in which honor, conscience, and truth may be drowned.
2. 将 as 改为than 3. 将 So 改为 But 或者 However 或者 Nevertheless
4. 将 about 去掉
5. 将 you 改为 they
6. 将 like 改为 as
9. 将 others 改为 other

One important outcome of the work on the expression of genes in developing embryos is sure to be knowledge that can help preventing birth defects. Just as promising (26) is the possibility of unraveling the complicated writing (27) of the brain. A mechanic gets valuable insight how an (28) automobile works by rebuilding car engines; similarly, neuroscientists can learn how the brain functions from (29) the way it is put together. The next step pursuing the (30) goal is to find out how the blueprint genes, the home box genes, control the expression of other genes that create the valves and piston of the working cerebral engine.
The protein encoded by the latter genes could change the (31) stickiness of the cell surface, the shape of the cell or its metabolism to create the characteristic peculiar to, say, neurons or neural-crest cell. Surface proteins may be the (32) mechanism, whereby similar programmed cells stick together to form specific structures; they might also sense (33)the local environment to help the cell decide what is to do.
Clarifying those mechanisms will engage the best talents in (34) embryology and molecular biology for some times to come. (35) What is perhaps the most intriguing question of all is if the brain is powerful enough to solve the puzzle of its own creation.
28.sight 后加 into
29.neuroscientist 改为 a neuroscientist
30.pursuing 后加 in
31.later 改为 latter
32.similar 改为 similarly
33.去掉 is
34.times 改为 time
35.if 改为 whether

for one’s family, and started a farm. These small households were _____3
portraits of independence: the entire family- mother, father, children, even grandparents-live in a small house and working together to ___4

a deep need. Many regarded the single-family house the basis of their way of life._____10
答案:
1. 将 no 改为 not 2.
Solitude is a good place to visit but a poor place to stay.
There is a vacant piece of land near the house; we can build there.
4. 将 working 改为 work
6. 将 but 删除 7. 将 before 改为 after
8. 将 But 改为 And
When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. And that’s my religion.
9 将 it 改为 they
10 在house the中间加入介词 as
regard...as 作“把……当作……”讲。

专八模拟试题(写作篇2)
It has recently been announced that a new restaurant may be built in your neighborhood. Do you support or oppose this plan? Why? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
I can see both advantages and disadvantages to having a new restaurant built in our neighborhood. I’m worried about traffic and how it will affect our neighborhood. However, I think that it will benefit local businesses and increase appreciation for our neighborhood. Overall, I think it is a good idea.
Traffic congestion is always a concern when you build something new. Our streets are narrow, with parking on both sides. More cars traveling through the neighborhood could cause a lot of congesting. Traffic means parking problems, too. Our neighborhood has very few garages attached to the houses. Most of us depend on finding a space to park on the street. If the new restaurant is built, we’ll be competing for those spaces with the restaurant’s patrons. Plus, if the restaurant offers wallet parking, it’ll be even worse. Valet parkers work in teams to grab every possible space available on the street.
I’m also concerned about the type of patrons this new restaurant will bring into our neighborhood. A family restaurant wouldn’t be a problem. However, if it’s going have a bar and dancing, then there could be problems. The restaurant would stay open later, and people leaving the restaurant might be drunk. Who wouldn’t worry about rowdy customers staggering around our neighborhood in the early morning hours, looking for their cars?
I have to admit, though, there are advantages to a new restaurant. Our neighborhood could certainly use the jobs the restaurant would provide. Not only that, the money neighborhood residents would earn there would likely be spent at other neighborhood businesses. This would give a boost to those businesses and make our neighborhood more prosperous. A new restaurant would also attract a lot of people to our neighborhood. They could see what a nice area this is to live. That might attract new residents to the neighborhood. That would be a good thing, because we’ve been losing residents to the suburbs the last couple of years.
There are a lot of details to consider, but all in all, I support the idea of this new restaurant in our neighborhood
Some people think that they can learn better by themselves than with a teacher. Others think that it is always better to have a teacher. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons to develop your essay.
Most of us can learn how to do something simple on our own with just a set of instructions. However, to learn about something more complex, it’s always best to have a teacher.
Teachers bring with them varied and useful backgrounds. They’ve been trained to teach individuals in different ways depending on their style. For instance, omen students learn better by discussing a topic. Others learn more by writing about it. Teachers can help students learn in the way that’s best of each student. A textbook or a manual can only give you one way of learning something. Plus they’re only as helpful as your ability to understand them. A good teacher can adapt her teaching to your needs.
Teachers help you focus on what you’re learning. If you’re learning something by yourself, it’s easy to become distracted, and go on to other activities. Teachers keep your attention on the subject. They also approach a subject logically, taking it one step at a time. On your own, it’s tempting to skip parts of the learning process you think you don’t need. That can binder your ability to really understand the subject.
Learning a subject on your own is a very narrow way of learning. You can only use the information you get from the textbook. With a teacher, you get the information in the written materials as well as the teacher’s own knowledge of the topic. Teachers can also provide extra materials to broaden the scope of what you’re learning.
There’s nothing wrong with studying on your own, and a learner can always benefit from some quiet study. For the best possible learning, though, a good teacher is the biggest help you can have.

”Of making books there is no end," complained the Preacher; and did not perceive how highly he was praising letters as an occupation. There is no end, indeed, to making books or experiments, or to travel, or to gathering wealth. Problem gives rise to problem. We may study for ever, and we are never as learned as we would. We have never made a statue worthy of our dreams. And when we have discovered a continent, or crossed a chain of mountains, it is only to find another ocean or another plain upon the further side. In the infinite universe there is room for our swiftest diligence and to spare. It is not like the works of Carlyle, which can be read to an end. Even in a corner of it, in a private park, or in the neighbourhood of a single hamlet, the weather and the seasons keep so deftly changing that although we walk there for a lifetime there will be always something new to startle and delight us.
