In a world where economic prosperity and “getting ahead” in work and technology are highly valued, creativity and the arts are often shunted in favor of more “practical” pursuits.
Students abandon dreams of acting or painting in order to major in medicine, computer technology, or engineering: highly profitable and scientific fields. Even with the advances in these fields, however, there is still a need for creativity in our world, because seeing things in a new way can make all the difference.
Today, more and more public schools are forced to abandon their arts programs to make time for subjects like science and math: subjects in which all students must have a basic knowledge in order to succeed in higher education. However, by leaving these programs behind, children are deprived of the creative stimulation that the arts provide, and are taught to view the world in “black and white” terms: one right answer to every problem.
With a view such as this, how will children perform in the future? It may be assumed that all people will see things the same way, and propose only one solution to a problem, failing to see the bigger picture.
Creativity has obviously influenced earlier generations in a positive way, so there is no need to eliminate creativity from our world. What would have happened if Franklin Roosevelt had never proposed his New Deal? The Great Depression might have persisted for some time, robbing even more families of their chance at prosperity and happiness. However, by proposing a new, creative solution for the problem of the U.S.’s depression,
FDR pulled the nation out of its slump. Another example of how creativity has positively influenced the world happened just recently,
with the introduction of hybrid cars. These new cars do not rely on as much oil as other cars do in order to operate, using alternative energy sources instead. Without the creative minds behind the invention of these cars, the world would rely so much on its limited oil reserves that fuel would eventually run out. Because of creativity, the world has a chance to find other energy sources.
Though these practical applications for creativity are conducive to everyone, the common man benefits even more from the stimulation that the arts provide. In a world dominated by political powers and torn apart by war, entertainers in the arts can inspire hope and change in everyone.
A child watching a Charlie Chaplin film might decide to join the gymnastics team, or a woman observing a Monet painting in a museum might become an elementary school art teacher: who knows? The arts can transport people to other places, into different ways of thinking.
The importance of creativity in the world today is enormous,
for it has both pragmatic and “important” applications. Creativity is both a source for inspiration and a problem-solving method, and without it, our world would greatly suffer.

Prompt:
When you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. You have the choice. You can overcome and be a winner, or you can allow it to overcome you, and be a loser. It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure.--Mary Kay Ash
Assignment:
What is your view of the idea that every obstacle can be turned into an opportunity? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your po-sition with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or obser-vations.
Essay Sample:
Every obstacle can be turned into an opportunity, if one has the right attitude or perspective. People with this attitude are buoyant, not easily discouraged, and welcome challenges and adversity. One personal example took place in sixth grade, when I broke my hand by falling off my bicycle. The doctor had to put it into a cast.
The cast was a real obstacle. It was on my right hand, the one I write with. It looked like homework would be impossible! But I learned to type with one hand, and I did my English and social studies work on the typewrite. My mom helped me by writing out my math homework based on answers I gave her. The expe-rience sure helped my typing! It also made me learn the value of work, and gave me a chance to really learn to appreciate my mother.

Conscience can illustrate the right and wrong in the developing society and the truly value we exist in the world. Money and power are just our achievement.
To me, conscience is a stronger motivator in comparison with money, power and fame, for it not only shows us what is right and wrong but also the value of our existence, namely, what we can contribute to the society.

Steve Jobs, the brilliant and talented leader of Apple, who wins the battle in harsh consumer market with great creativity.
Thomas Edison who was one of the greatest inventors in the history. In his life, the most famous and important invention was electric light.
According to those two examples, that’s why I agree that those people who are confident and optimistic can change their lives easily.
这个句子则是出现了另一个极端,according to…., that is why…
Despite many other company are capable of producing such ordinary goods, Steve Jobs uses creativity to distinguish his products and apple from the crowd.
The reason is because confidence and optimism can give people stimulation and impel them to achieve their goals.
However, during the time of inventing it, Edison had thousands of failures, but he never complained about that.
His products are well-known for the unique design, adding strong functions like tapping fingers to control the phone.
Testing to have an extremely harsh disease, Stephen was predicated to live on only 2 years.
Nowadays, people are facing much more difficulties to be unique but creativity is a trait that worth tracing because it is well-rewarded.
I totally agree that people who are confident and optimistic can change their lives easier than those people who are pessimistic.
When people have adversities, many people begin to complain the unfortunate situation, …
Firstly, when Charles was 5, his little brother drowned in their mother’s backyard laundry tub in spite of Ray’s frantic efforts to save him. Secondly, Charles’ eyes began to mysteriously fail him. By the age of 7, Charles was blind. After that, he lost his beloved mother.
“However” is always being seen. Sometimes the theorem testified to be quite true can be a paradox when scrutinized from a different angle.
Is there always another explanation or another point of view?
Change the glasses in front of your eyes and the world can be different.
“Glass in front of your eyes”
It makes people’s cognizance more objective and triggers a comprehensive realization.
Individual is a main factor.
这是 Can a small group of concerned individuals have a significant impact on the world?
My family used to live in a village, but my parents went to urban to work and I to study. It was a long distance, so we had to spend an average of 3.5 hours in our car everyday. We had to get up early to set out and return home late at night.
Liu Xiang is a famous runner in China. We have also seen him as the pride of China until recently. Back then in Olympics, Liu Xiang astonished the world by getting the first place, Chinese were so excited.

Spacewoman Stuck in Orbit with Too Much Shrimp Peggy Whitson, the American astronaut spending her 130th day in space, said on Sunday that she was happy in orbit, but maybe she brought along too much shrimp.
Sometimes, when you come to space, your tastes change. One of my favorite foods on the ground is shrimp, and up here I cant stand it, said Whitson, the science officer on the International Space Station . A quick check of the stations manifest showed that Whitson had planned more than 40 shrimp meals for her stay. The guys like it because they get all my shrimp, she said, referring to her two Russian crewmates, Valery Korzun and Sergei Treshcvev. The three members of the space stations Expedition Five team held a joint news conference with the six astronauts from the space shuttle Atlantis on Sunday. 39;m having a great time up here. Its fun to live here and do the science, said Whitson, a biochemist conducting and monitoring dozens of studies on the station. When someone asked about her plans for Christmas, Whitson said Its hard to imagine being back home because I guess I feel like this is my home right now.
I dont have my husband, but other than that, this is my home. Whitson, due to return to Earth with Korzun and Treschev aboard a U.S. shuttle in November, said some changes in space take more getting used to than others. Salsa can usually overcome space blandness. We could probably eat paper if we had it with salsa, she said. But calluses are another matter. In weightlessness, she never actually stands, but does sway about with her feet in foot restraints. It was really interesting to me to lose the calluses from the bottom of your feet and to get calluses on the top of your feet after being up here for a few months, she said.

In a flash moment, I went from being a happy expectant mother, to being someone afraid for her life, she told reporters.
Minutes after doctors delivered Nate by emergency C-section, Southcott went into surgery. The diagnosis was ovarian cancer.
Suddenly tears and chemotherapy overtook her life. But the lowest moment came after she lost all her hair and a free wig arrived.
She tried it on as her older son Kyler watched.
I thought I can cry about this bad wig and hell remember it, or I can laugh about it and he will remember that, Southcott said.
That was when she started laughing a lot, and found it was the perfect medicine.
I spent a lot time looking for anything humor based for cancer patients, she said. And Ill tell you what: There isnt much out there.
Using herself as a bald model, Bonnie started her own line of greeting cards and a calendar. Each pose pokes fun at the tribulations of chemo.
We desperately need to laugh, she said. Its vital to our joy.
Even though Southcotts ovarian cancer is in remission, the diagnosis is no laughing matter - a 25-percent chance she will live for another two-years.
She plans to appreciate every moment of motherhood. And she plans to laugh.

A requirement for membership in any group is conformity. Members must agree on such vital issues as how decisions will be made, who will serve as leaders, and how much freedom group members will have. The quality of decision making, however, is better when groups encourage nonconformity and disagreement among their members. Although it sometimes creates disorder and conflict, disagreement may prevent powerful majorities from making mistakes.
Assignment: Do groups that encourage nonconformity and disagreement function better than those that discourage it? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. FOR BLOOMING IN WARDSNIGHTINGALE
In May 1857 a Commission to study the whole question of the army medical service began to sit. The price was high. Florence Nightingale was doing this grueling work because it was vital, not because she had chosen it. She had changed. Now she was more brilliant in argument than ever, more efficient, more knowledgeable, more persistent and penetrating in her reasoning, scrupulously just, mathematically accuratebut she was pushing herself to the very limits of her capacity at the expense of all joy.
That summer of 1857 was a nightmare for Florencenot only was she working day and night to instruct the politicians sitting on the Commission, she was writing her own confidential report about her experiences. All this while Parthe and Mama lay about on sofas, telling each other not to get exhausted arranging flowers.
It took Florence only six months to complete her own one-thousand-page Confidential Report, Notes on Matters Affecting the Health, Efficiency and Hospital Administration of the British Army. It was an incredibly clear, deeply-considered volume. Every single thing she had learned from t Crimea was thereevery statement she made was backed by hard evidence.
Florence Nightingale was basically arguing for prevention rather than cure. It was a new idea then and many politicians and army medical men felt it was revolutionary and positively cranky. They grimly opposed Florence and her allies.

Rabbi Meir
Rabbi Meir, a second-century scholar, admonished his disciples to look not at the pitcher but as its contents because, he stated Many a new pitcher has been found to be full of old wine. This was his way of emphasizing the importance of the distinction between form and idea, and of stressing that the integrity of an idea is more important than the form of its expression.

The theory of evolution is one of the great intellectual revolutions of human history.
When Darwin published his famous On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, members of the religious community, as well as some scientific peers, were outraged and protested. However, Darwins idea was eventually accepted and had drastically changed our perception of the world and of our place in it.
Hundreds of years ago, people were confused with the complexity of different species of the world, and believed that species were created by the mysterious God. However, Darwin did not believe so. After several years study, he eventually demonstrated that species, however complex seemingly, all evolved by natural selection from simple and preliminary conditions. Darwins theory revealed the simple principle of the world, and thus became a revolution of human beings.

To change is to risk something, making us feel insecure. Not to change is a bigger risk, though we seldom feel that way. There is no choice but to change. People, however, cannot be motivated to change from the outside. All of our motivation comes from within.

Assignment
What motivates people to change? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from you reading, studies, experience, or observations.
Sample Essay
What motivates people to change is a relentless and innate desire for self-improvement. Rarely ever has history seen a man or society kick back, relax, and say Well that about does it. Not much else to do here! Within every person is the potential to achieve greatness in some form; be it athletically, mentally, spiritually. This inherent potential demands that people continue to explore and change both their environments and themselves throughout their lifes course. Never should a man be idle for too long. After acknowledging the changes a man has already made to his environment, the pursuit of self-improvement will once again stir within his soul and call him to action. This internal desire, this pursuit of challenge and perfection, does not prohibit man from being happy with his status and achievements. On the contrary, the device serves more to allow the man to constantly strive for greater change, newer innovation. What motivates people to change is the ongoing need to redefine peoples lives and identities to elevate them to higher levels of eminence and sucess.

A Call for National Service。
It is widely acknowledged that a man in possession of certain unalienable rights will not automatically undertake the corresponding responsibilities. With an intense sense of social responsibility, American writer E. J. Dionne Jr. proclaims that civil obligations should be implemented nationwide in his article “ A call for national service” in Washington post. He asserts unavoidable rights must be execrated. Strategies E. J. Dionne Jr. employs to bolster his argument include a personal anecdote, a citation of compelling polls, a quotation from the prestigious American documentation, compare and contrast, paralleled structure and sincere appeal to pathos.
E.J. Dionne starts his article by illustrating that “ here is the sentence in the Declaration of Independence we always remember” and “here is the sentence we often forget”, which are the paralleled structures to convey his urgency and attentive concern for the issue that American citizens should cherish their obligations. Furthermore, he directly enumerates that the previous is on rights and the latter obligations. This distinct contrast is utilized to establish an emphasis on his latter point by highlighting it as a coexisting factor relative to the former mentioned rights in American life. This literal tool serves as a strong technique to draw the audience into the issue addressed in the wiring.
By citing a quotation from “the Declaration of Independence” the author successfully establishes an authoritative image in the readers’ heart that he is knowledgeable and thoughtful. E.J. Dionne’s presentation of a numerical statistics based on the accurate “237” year and age range “18 and 28” strengthens his weight to his claim. Moreover, the author demonstrates a personal anecdote that “last week, the Aspen Institute gathered a politically diverse group of Americans…to declare a commitment to give a year of service to the country”, which provides a baseline for readers to find credence and credibility with the author’s argument. This anecdote instantly connects the author and readers closely which leads to a spiritual resonance.
Dionne Jr. reasons that not only Americans could enjoy their rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness freely but also should assume their obligations on the solemn pledge of lives, fortunes and sacred honor. “There are no quick fixes to our sense of disconnection, but there may be a way to restore our sense.” He first raises a precaution in the readers’ heart then offers a sound solution to show the stringent and well-organized thinking pattern. Subsequently, the author exemplifies an occurrence last week, the precise time flow line, to underline the viewpoint that “ we do, indeed, owe something to our country and we owe an enormous debt”.
Dionne utilizes specific diction to enhance his argument to convince his readers. He employs personal pronoun such as “ we” for the aim to intrigue his personnel involvement as part of this calling which fortifies his persuasion as well as consolidates his credibility in the preachment. Through the careful word selection, Dionne enhances his proposition by ascribing the liability as a fundamental issue. This augments for the persuasion of his readers by informing them that this is a significant issue that all people should be aware of and take heed to.
Following the calling, the author lists the solutions and the challenges in the final parts of the article. He makes an efficient use of rhetorical question to challenge his readers to ponder that “ who knows whether the universal exception of service would change the country as much as Mc Chrystal hopes.” By raising this question, Dionne draws out profound comprehension on the proposal. “It’s based on the belief that certain unalienable rights entail certain unavoidable responsibilities”-----the author inspires his readers to feel responsible for the fate of America’s future. This strategy is obviously an appeal to pathos, calling the readers to act resolutely and adding the emotionally-infused spur to the American citizens.
Overall, E. J. Dionne Jr. provides a coherent and strong logical argument that all Americans should enjoy the unalienable rights that have been prescribed in “the Declaration of Independence” and shoulder the obligations cross the lines of class, race, background, politics, ideology as well. He takes full advantages of a personal anecdote, compelling polls, an authoritative quotation, compare and contrast, paralleled structure and heart-felt appeal to emotions to thoroughly illustrate his steadfast calling for national service.

All progress has resulted from people who took unpopular positions. Adlai Stevenson, speech at Princeton, 1954.

SAT Essay Sample
I believe that progress is achieved by people that take unpoplar positions. To be popular often means trying to please everyone. Progress, on the other hand, comes from making difficult decisions that often dont satisfy everyone. Whether its politicians, parents, or even myself, progress has often come from making unpopular decisions.
Many politicians have to make unpopular decisions. Abraham Lincoln is revered today but during his lifetime the Civil War was very unpopular. There was rioting over the draft and the destruction of lives and property wasnt popular either. But without the unpopular decisions he made it is hard to imagine what the United States would be like today.
My parents also make unpopular decisions. One such decision was when they sent me to summer camp when I was 14. I didnt want to go but it turned out to be a terrific experience. I learned a lot about wildlife and nature. At the time it was not a popular thing to do but I really benefitted from it.

Henry Ford
Henry Ford
MACHINE MAD HENRY FORD Growing up on a remote Michigan farm. Henry Ford knew little of all this but he soon showed signs that he belonged to a new generation of Americans interested more in the industrial future than in the agricultural past. Like most pioneer farmers, his father, William, hoped that his eldest son would join him on the farm, enable it to expand, and eventually take it over. But Henry proved a disappointment. He hated farm work and did everything he could to avoid it . It was not that he was lazy. Far from it. Give him a mechanical job to do, from mending the hinges of a gate to sharpening tools, and he would set to work eagerly.
It was the daily life of the farm, with its repetitive tasks, that frustrated him. What a waste it is, he was to write years later, remembering his work in the fields, for a human being to spend hours and days behind a slowly moving team of houses. Henry was excited by the possibilities for the future that were being opened up by developments in technology that could free farmers like his father from wasteful and boring toil. But these developments, in Henrys boyhood, had touched farming hardly at all and farmers went on doing things in the way they had always done. Low profits, the uncertainties of the weather, and farmers instinctive resistance to change prevented all but the richest and most far-sighted farmers from taking advantage of the new age of machines. So Henry turned his attention elsewhere. When he was twelve he became almost obsessively interested in clocks and watches. Like most children before and since, he became fascinated by peering into the workings of a timepiece and watching the movement of ratchets and wheels, springs and pendulums.
Soon he was repairing clocks and watches for friends, working at a bench he built in his bedroom. In 1876, Henry suffered a grievous blow. Mary died in childbirth. There was now no reason for him to stay on the farm, and he resolved to get away as soon as he could. Three years later, he took a job as a mechanic in Detroit. By this time steam engines had joined clocks and watches as objects of Henrys fascination. According to an account given by Henry himself, he first saw a steam-driven road locomotive one day in 1877 when he and his father, in their horse-drawn farm wagon, met one on the road. The locomotive driver stopped to let the wagon pass, and Henry jumped down and went to him with a barrage of technical questions about the engines performance. From then on, for a while, Henry became infatuated with steam engines. Making and installing them was the business of the Detroit workshop that he joined at the age of sixteen. A chance meeting with an old co-worker led to a job for Henry as an engineer at the Edison Detroit Electricity Company, the leading force in another new industry. Power stations were being built and cables being laid in all of the United States major cities; the age of electricity had dawned. But although Henry quickly learned the ropes of his new job so quickly that within four years he was chief engineer at the Detroit power plant his interest in fuel engines had come to dominate his life. At first in the kitchen of his and Claras home, and later in a shed at the back of their house, he spent his spare time in the evenings trying to build an engine to his own design. Meanwhile, Henrys domestic responsibilities had increased. In November 1893, Clara gave birth to their first and only child, Edsel.
Henry learned the hard way what a slow, painstaking business it was to build an engine by hand from scratch. Every piece of every component had to be fashioned individually, checked and rechecked, and tested. Every problem had to be worried over and solved by the builder. To ease the burden, Henry joined forces with another mechanic, Jim Bishop, Even so, it was two years before they had succeeded in building a working car. It was an ungainly-looking vehicle, mounted on bicycle wheels and driven by a rubber belt that connected the engine to the rear wheels. Henry called it the Quadricycle.

Although he will always be remembered for portraying Superman, the greatest role of actor Christopher Reeves life was as a champion of sufferers of spinal cord injuries and an advocate of stem cell research.
Unlike the man of steel, he wasnt faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and he couldnt leap tall buildings in a single bound.
But the courage and determination Reeve displayed in trying to overcome his paralysis from a 1995 horse-riding accident far surpassed any of the feats of the comic book hero.
He became a real-life Superman. His heroism, his courage was extraordinary, Colin Blakemore, the chief executive of Britains Medical Research Council said.
Like many people who suffer some terrible injury, Christopher Reeve was reinvented by that experience and brought the kind of energy and enthusiasm that made him successful as a film star to an entirely different issue, with huge effect.
Reeve, 52, died on October 10 of heart failure after having treatment for an infected pressure wound without realizing his dream of walking again.
But in the nine years since his accident, he made personal progress to regain some feeling, established the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, a non-profit research organization, and used his fame to raise millions of dollars for research into spinal cord injuries.
